I’d like share with you what I’ve been up to in the last few weeks.  As always, I’ve been busy organizing paint outs with my group, framing paintings to exhibit at Artilicious, painting, entering paintings in contests with the Oil Painters of America, delivered a painting to its new home in Amherstburg, cleaned up a flooded basement, (yah that happened) and went to three fundraisers in one week. Yep, I never stop.

I sent a photo to Arms Bumanlag the weather reporter at CTV Windsor that he used on his Facebook site on October 27th.

Say hello to my latest plein air piece.  This is the lovely Gibson Gallery located in Amherstburg, Ontario.  My group, The Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Artists group exhibition “Painted on Location in the Great Outdoors.” is currently on display there until August 2nd.  This painting will be one of over 35 paintings featured in my solo exhibition at ArtSpeak Gallery in Windsor, Ontario.  This exhibition opens on Monday July 20th, and runs to Saturday July 25th.  ArtSpeak Gallery is located in the historic neighborhood of Walkerville.  It is my extreme pleasure to be showing my work in the gallery during the 13th annual Art Walk & Rock Festival.  This festival is one of two annual art walks, and by far the best attended.  There will be dancing in the streets to the rock bands. and foodies in the cafe’s sampling local wine, and craft beer.  An event not to be missed!

…This former Michigan Central Railroad Station, ca. 1896, has been renovated to its original Romanesque glory featuring towering ceilings, hardwood floors and beveled glass windows. A full season of exhibits showcasing Essex County artists, traveling exhibits from Ontario museums and galleries and an unique Artisan Shoppe make this heritage building a vital center for the visual arts, offering art and craft lessons, an artist guild and three needle art guilds. A railroad museum, featuring artifacts and memorabilia, is housed in the attached caboose. ~Gibson Gallery

The Lavender Festival was a two day event.  Our group was supposed to paint on location in the lavender beds on Saturday, but mother nature decided to dump torrential rains on us once again.  Will it ever end?!  I know California could really use some of this rain.  Fortunately, Sunday was a much better day.  It was a bit windy, but their were bright fluffy clouds, and beautiful sun.

I spent two blissful days on Pelee Island, but now it’s time for me to buckle down and let everyone know what’s happening in the near future.  June has already been a busy month, but there is still more to come.  July kicks off many events in Windsor and Essex County.  There are festivals everywhere.  Amherstburg hosts many summer events.  My group, The Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Artists, will be part of Amherstburg summer activities.  The Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg, Ontario will host our member’s exhibition during the Month of July.

One of Windsor’s best events is the Walkerville Art Walk & Rock street festival.  The streets are closed and Walkerville businesses open their doors and host the work of area artists.  You can dine at one of the many great restaurants, or sit and listen to tribute bands as you sip wine and nibble on hors-d’œuvre on the patios.

Last but definitely not least, I’m doing it!  For  many years I’ve arranged group shows, and never had time for my own solo show.  Well this is the year I finally get out there and present my work at the Artspeak Gallery.  Do come out and see what I’ve been up to this past year.

Some of you know that I run the group Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Artists.  Well, quite often I get so busy there I don’t get to keep up my own blog and website.  SO, here’s a catch up!

It’s been an incredible winter!  Even with the extreme cold, our group is painting in -18 C weather!  YES!!  Some of the places we’ve visited this winter are:

  • Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village
  • Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Museum Inc
  • John R Park Homestead
  • Ducharme Maple Syrup Farm, Oxley
  • Ojibway Park

We’ve received some great press coverage. (Click on photo to go to articles.)  The Windsor Star has a video clip of an interview with me.

I am very happy to announce that my painting “Paint Your Wagon” was awarded 2nd prize in the Quick Paint catagory at the Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival by the 2014 awarding Judge,

Paint Your Wagon, 8 x 10 Oil on board in Private Collection 2nd place Quick Paint, Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival. Sold!
Judge for the Dexter Plein Air Festival, internationally acclaimed artist Kenneth Cadwallade, current President of Oil Painters of America, and Elizabeth MacDonald with Elizabeth’s 2nd place winning quick paint entry “Paint Your Wagon”

I painted 4 paintings during the week, and started on a commission. I could have painted more except we had rain Monday and Tuesday. I painted 3 evenings on Nocturne paintings. First time ever for a nocturne and it was loads of fun, except it was freezing cold in the 50’s.

The most exciting part is that all 5 of my paintings from the week (commission included) SOLD!!!  What an incredible week!  I had so much fun.  It was also a grueling week.  Standing  from 8 A.M. until Midnight at my age is quite painful and exhausting, but I survived.  We had some real cold weather where the temperatures dropped into the 50’s.  I chose to paint a nocturne, and I got a commission while painting it, so I ended up painting in those cold conditions for three nights in a row.  I developed laryngitis, but thankfully I got my voice back quickly.  The voice probably was from talking as well.  There were a lot of visitors to my easel.  One gentleman brought me pizza while I was painting at night!  It was YUMMY!  Dexter has great pizza.

Save Willistead Park!

Canada, City of Windsor, Ontario, Save Willistead Park, Willistead

Save Willistead ParkMy group the Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Society have spent many hours painting in this park and we do not want to see these 10 foot wide hard surfaced pathways running through the park grounds.

Mandate of the Save Willistead Park group.

This Group is called “Save Willistead Park,” because that’s it’s only purpose. It’s not a focus group or an idea incubator. It is a means for its members to increase awareness of and vehemently oppose the proposed roadway planned for our park. Make no mistake, the drive to deface the park has great momentum, and will not be easily reversed.

While our strength increases with our ever growing numbers, its vital that we express with one voice, a clear, concise, spin proof, message. It comes down to one, simple question. Do we want the park to stay as it is in all its pristine glory or do we want a 10 feet wide asphalt maize running through it. Half measures and partial compromises cannot be an option. Deface the park or leave it the way it is. It’s either one or the other. From your heartfelt, passionate comments, I am certain that we can all agree to the following, one, unequivocal demand.

This Group of 435 members and counting , while endorsing the drainage improvements in the park, demands that Willistead be left in its natural state of beauty. We do not want a 10 feet super walking path or any variation thereof, threading the park, as it replacers over 10% of precious grass with concrete, asphalt or interlocking brick. We also demand that the road construction that was so suddenly begun, be reversed and the park restored to its original condition. ~ Howard Weeks, October 20th, 2013 on Facebook group Save Willistead Park!

Please join the group on Facebook to keep informed about what is happening to our beloved Willistead Park Grounds.  There is a meeting planned with the City of Windsor at Willistead Manor.  We are waiting for the date and time to be confirmed.
